The University of Southampton offers highly regarded PGCE programmes, rated Outstanding by OFSTED and backed by cutting-edge educational research from a Russell Group University.
We prepare future teachers through a school-based model that puts you in the classroom from the start, with support from expert tutors and a strong professional network.
Our PGCE students benefit from training in their specific subject groups, dedicated personal tutors, and a focus on well-being throughout their training. Most go on to secure their first teaching roles within our extensive partnership schools, even before graduating.
With placements in welcoming school environments and regular campus days to connect theory with practice, our PGCE programmes are designed for real impact and to support you to start your journey in changing lives.

Our Primary PGCE offers a personalised journey with continuous support from a single tutor throughout the programme. You'll take part in two main placements and a unique early-stage LATiCE placement. This allows you to explore how educational theory is applied in the classroom.
You’ll spend around 75% of your time in schools, building confidence and experience, and developing strong relationships with staff and pupils. Students often describe the course as a “close-knit family” and praise the welcoming, team-based culture of partner schools.
Many of our students are offered teaching positions within their placement schools before the course ends, making this not just a qualification, but a direct route into teaching.
