The University of Strathclyde: Launching MSc Secondary Education. Apply now for September 2025

Designed to prepare aspiring teachers with the knowledge, experience, and internationally recognised qualifications to inspire the next generation, the University of Strathclyde has launched MSc Secondary Education, a programme for international students wishing to follow a career in secondary teaching in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, or Computing Science.

The brand new postgraduate Master's programme will launch its first intake in August 2025. Whether pursuing a teaching career in Scotland or worldwide, this course provides a theoretical and practical starting point to kickstart any teaching career. The course is unique in allowing you to work in the field of a small-scale research study, which will lead to the qualification of MSc.

The programme is delivered by the Strathclyde Institute of Education, one of the largest teacher education departments in Scotland and is committed to innovative research centred around four key themes: Children, Childhood, and Development; Curriculum and Pedagogy; Health and Wellbeing; Social Justice, Culture, and Policy.

Graduates will be well-positioned to lead, innovate, and shape the future of secondary education.

What you’ll learn

This course will equip you with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills you require. The programme is modular in structure, and students will study three modules across the year:

  • Education Studies; Professional Values
  • Professional Learning Through Enquiry
  • Professional Skills
  • Professional Skills - Curriculum and Pedagogy
  • Professional Skills - Professional Practice

Funding your studies

The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Strathclyde is delighted to offer scholarships to all eligible postgraduate taught, self-funded, international fee-paying offer holders, joining the MSc Secondary Education programme in August 2025.

The scholarships will be awarded to the value of £5,000.

Your Career

At the University of Strathclyde, we pride ourselves on being “the Place of Useful learning”.  With up to 18 weeks placement experience in a Scottish secondary school setting, you’ll have the opportunity to apply your learning in a real life setting to hone your skills and develop your practice, preparing you for life in the classroom after graduation.

The MSc Secondary Education allows you to apply for Qualified Teacher status and register with the General Teaching Council for Scotland. This qualifies you to teach in Scotland and other locations worldwide (check with your local teaching authority for suitability).
