LJMU’s Liverpool School of Art and Design has been synonymous with developing cutting-edge, thoughtful art and design practice since its earliest inception as the Liverpool Mechanics’ Institute in 1825. Over the years the School of Art and Design has gone through many changes, but the essence still remains – striving to continually develop disciplines through fostering a strong collaboration with our students; excelling in teaching and learning; embedding research and scholarship in all that we do and engaging both socially and economically with our communities.
We see postgraduate education as a vital stepping stone for practitioners wishing to advance their art and design practice, which is why we have developed programmes across a wide spectrum of disciplines, all delivered by leading academics in state-of-the-art facilities.
Our postgraduate portfolio contains many practice-led subjects such as the innovative Art in Science, Graphic Design and Illustration, and Fashion Innovation and Realisation, alongside more established programmes such as MA Fine Art and MRes Art and Design. This broad offering gives practitioners, graduates, returners to education and international students a range of options suited to their ambitions. There are opportunities to engage with other practitioners and academics across disciplines, to foster diverse working practices and build strong networks for the future.
