Staff in all subject areas are engaged in research and their range of expertise ensures research degrees can be pursued across most subjects. From finding new ways to manage the effects of climate-change, to discovering new treatments for Cystic Fibrosis, academics tackle major issues affecting today’s society and their expertise continues to push the boundaries of knowledge. Subsequently, Edge Hill performs well in the national Research Excellence Framework (REF) and has been crowned University of the Year* recognising its significant investment in development and innovation.

Be an agent of change

Edge Hill offers three routes into a research degree, available on a full and part-time basis:

  • MRes – a highly flexible programme, undertaken over 1 year full-time or 18 months part-time, it offers a short, intensive research experience in your subject of interest. Students will undertake a research project to develop a range of transferable skills which will help with further research and prepare you for a PhD.
  • PhD – over 3 years full-time or 4.5 years part-time, students focus on a research area in depth, receive substantial training in a variety of research approaches and write a thesis that demonstrates your understanding of how to develop a critical academic argument.
  • Professional Doctorate – similar in timescale to a PhD they are designed to create knowledge that advances professional practice. This is available in Emergency Services Management.

A first-class research environment

The University has invested over £300m to create the right environment for its students. A UK Top 10 Modern Institution*, Edge Hill offers some of the most ground-breaking facilities in UK higher education. Subject-specific facilities include the Clinical Skills and Simulation Centre for Health researchers and specialist biomechanics workshops for Sport Science researchers. Departmental facilities are complemented by the University library, located in the new Catalyst building. The library is open 24/7 home to an extensive range of print collections, professional journals and multimedia alongside dedicated silent study spaces. With all these facilities available at their fingertips, students rate Edge Hill best in the North West for its Teaching and Learning resources*.

Funding opportunities

Edge Hill offers one type of studentship available during the year. Graduate Teaching Assistants (GTAs) are full-time PhD studentships entirely funded by the University. GTAs undertake teaching/teaching support duties paying £9,000 per annum and a scholarship of £5,500 per annuum. Applications open in January and can be submitted though the University’s job webpage.

Students can also apply for scholarships celebrating determination, commitment and achievement in a variety of areas, worth up to £2,000. Alternatively, charities, trusts and other independent organisations may offer funding towards postgraduate research with specific eligibility criteria.
