Description

MSc Courses at the School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

At the heart of our teaching philosophy is the desire to give you programmes that are driven by research-informed teaching and are at the leading edge in their fields. We want you to be hands-on with as much of our equipment as possible, to develop skills as well as knowledge. If you aren’t in the lecture theatre or the lab, you may well be in the field – we are lucky to have a location that supports our field-based programmes. If you are not on a field-based programme, you will still find the sea, the moors and the city to be very beneficial for social and leisure activities.

Geography

Geography explores the relationships between people, places and the environment, focusing on contemporary global challenges such as sustainability and climate change. Our graduates have careers in government, conservation, environmental consultancy, teaching, aviation, and transport and planning, among others. We provide a supportive, student-centred environment where lectures are given by research-active academics – many are world leaders in their field. Lecturers use innovative teaching methods to bring geography to life in the classroom, in our state-of-the-art laboratories, and during fieldwork. The field trip schedule offers exciting overseas destinations and the chance to explore our coastal location close to two national parks and several areas of outstanding natural beauty.

Earth Science

Geologists are the cutting edge of research into sustainable futures. Through lectures, hands-on practicals and an extensive national and international fieldwork programme, our degrees develop your expert knowledge of the forces that have shaped our planet. Our new modules explore critical relationships between earth processes and society: how to reduce risks from natural hazards; understanding environmental change over time, and how we transition to cleaner energy sources. Enjoy exploring our exciting degree programmes and hearing from current students and graduates about their experiences.

Environmental Science

Environmental experts are at the cutting edge of addressing global environmental challenges. Our range of degrees provide students with the knowledge, expertise and skills to investigate and understand the impact of humans on the environment and start building sustainable solutions. Our academic staff share their pioneering research from a range of fields including climate change, biodiversity, conservation and sustainability, in marine and terrestrial ecosystems. Applying the latest techniques in the laboratory and the field, you will graduate ready to shape the future of fields from ecosystem management to environmental monitoring.

The Postgraduate Taught Experience Survey (PTES) 2022
