Description

Why Swansea University?

100% world-leading and internationally excellent environment – Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021

Embark on a transformative journey where innovation meets infrastructure with our Civil and Computational Engineering programmes at Swansea University. Explore the dynamic intersection of traditional civil engineering and cutting-edge computational techniques, shaping the future of sustainable infrastructure. We stand as a globally distinguished department, with Swansea’s engineers having played a pioneering role in the development of ground-breaking numerical techniques, including the revolutionary finite element method. Recognised as one of the top 100 discoveries and developments in UK universities that have changed the world, our contributions have left an indelible mark.

Swansea University is a world leader in Computational Methods and Engineering, a highly sought-after skill set in industry. Our multidisciplinary Computational courses are well-suited for individuals with a background in Engineering (Aerospace, Mechanical, Civil, Electrical) or Science (Mathematics, Physics) disciplines.

Exceptional Facilities

We have spent £900,000 on our Civil Engineering facilities to make sure that they are the best in the UK. Our teaching labs include the Concrete Lab, Geo-mechanics Lab, Fluid Dynamics Lab and Structures Lab.

In the concrete lab, students can practice mixing different materials to find out which blend creates the strongest concrete. We are able to test this with a crane which can create a pressure of 25 tonnes.

Employment Opportunities

Many of our graduates have gone on to work with companies such as ARUP, Atkins, Liang O Rourke and Matt MacDonald. The roles you might expect include Design Engineers, Resident Engineers, Construction Engineers and more. It is also common for civil engineering graduates to go on to work in the financial sector like accountancy, or the legal sector in law firms and patents because of their strong maths and analytical skills. Civil Engineering graduates are highly desirable by these different sectors because of their knowledge and familiarity with the technology and environment of the clients they will work with, giving them an advantage over accounting and law graduates.
